Important Information - Gambling Act 2005

The gambling laws in Great Britain are being updated and a new regime for the regulation of commercial gambling is being established. The new laws will come fully into force on 1 September 2007.

Gambling Act Transition Timetable

The DCMS have issued a letter dated 27 January 2007 to Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, OBE (Chairman, LACORS) from Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP (Minister for Sport) a section of which is set out below:

"As you know, in light of the lessons we have learned from the Licensing Act 2003, I am determined to give licensing authorities enough time to prepare to take on their new responsibilities under the Gambling Act.

I am writing to inform you of some minor adjustments to the timetable for finalising the local authority related premises licence regulations. All of these will be laid no later than 21 February, and most before then. To preserve the commitment to a three month period between laying the relevant regulations and the date licensing authorities begin to receive applications, I have decided to move the date for submission of advance applications from 30 April to 21 May."

Important Gambling Act 2005 Dates

1 January	Applications can be made to the Gambling Commission for Operators Licences/Personal Licences.
27 April	Date applications can be made to the Gambling Commission for Operators Licences to ensure Grandfather rights and Continuance Rights.
27 April	Last date for granting licences under the existing legislation for Betting Shops/Bingo Halls/Arcades.
21 May	Applications can be made to the Licensing Authority for Premises Licences/Permits.
29 June	Last date to apply to the Gambling Commission for Personal Licences to ensure Grandfather rights.
30 July	Last date to apply to Licensing Authority to ensure Grandfather rights etc.
1 September	Act comes into force
