ABOUT SHAW & SONSHistory of Shaw’s1750 – Henry Shaw set up as a printer in the city of London after travelling from Nairn in Scotland. In the early days the business concentrated on printing and binding, and later became involved in publishing legal forms and books 1930’s - Shaw’s remained a family business and moved the printing and binding operations from the city to a new factory in Sydenham. The Editorial department and office staff remained at the original Fetter Lane building during this period. 1960’s – Fetter Lane complex of premises was sold for redevelopment and the whole operation was transferred to Sydenham. 1970’s – The business transferred out of private ownership to become part of the Tridant Printing Group who were principally local newspaper publishers and general printers. 1979, through acquisition, Shaw’s became part of the Extel Group PLC by way of its subsidiary, the Burrups Group. 1988 – The St Ives Group acquired the Excel group and Shaw & Sons was handed over to the Gordon press – a private company. During this period, as part of a process of rationalisation, the printing and stationery parts of the business were moved to Gordon Press’s premises at Croydon. Premises at Crayford in Kent, were acquired to accommodate the publishing operation. 1997 – Through a management buy-out the company changed hands again. 2001 – The sale of the Gordon Press, put the business in the hands of its current owners and the whole operation was moved to the offices in Crayford, where it remains today. Shaw’s TodayThrough its history, Shaw’s was unusual in being both a publisher and a printer. Today, elements of this history are retained and the three principal departments remain, Publishing, Stationery and Commercial Print/Production. Along with offering general and specialist stationery, the business has diversified and expanded the services it offers to customers to include an extensive elections department as well as providing civic and ceremonial items. A key department within Shaw’s is Editorial. Our In-house editors, legal specialists and typesetters ensure that forms for legal, local government and electoral staff are always updated with legislative changes. Shaw’s Forms on Disk software package is now an important and successful part of the business. Aimed at the legal sector and local authorities, the package allows forms to be completed on screen, stored and printed as necessary. Shaw’s publish a range of books from annual directories to specialist publications. Shaw’s main book list currently comprises almost sixty titles principally based on the legal and local government sector. The civic and ceremonial department supplies a variety of items mainly to local authorities, city livery companies and professional institutions. These include civic insignia, illuminated addresses, honorary freedom scrolls, distinguished visitor books, heraldic plaques and various certificates. Shaw & Sons presents a quite diverse, although largely inter-related activities. It may well be this diversity and ability to identify niche markets that has allowed Shaw & Sons to remain in business for over 250 years.
